Frequently Asked Questions

Most established portrait studios should plan on $1,000 to $2,500 a month in direct ad spend. If you are still proving your offer, start around $500 and keep it to retargeting or one narrow test. Studios with strong sales and spare capacity may invest $3,000 to $5,000. Cold Meta prospecting needs about $1,000 to $1,500 a month and Google Search at least $1,500, so if your budget can't fund both, pick one. These are planning ranges, not a promise.
Start with Google if people in your market already search for your genre, like "newborn photographer near me." Start with Meta if your genre sells on inspiration, like boudoir or family lifestyle, or if your market is too small for much search volume. Google captures people who are already looking for a photographer. Meta reaches people who fit your ideal client before they start searching. Most studios eventually use both: Google for high-intent leads, Meta for volume and retargeting.
The biggest mistake is testing too many variables at once. Run one ad, to one audience, with one offer, and change only one thing at a time when you optimize, so you know what actually moved the result. Before you build anything, write down the single action you want the viewer to take, whether that's click, opt in or book, and build the image, headline and copy around it. And never run an ad without the Facebook pixel installed.
Tighten your geography, your keywords and your landing page. Target a 5 to 15 mile radius, use exact-match keywords, and send clicks to a dedicated page that matches the ad instead of your homepage, since Google also rates your campaigns partly on that page. Then add negative keywords like "free," "DIY," "photography tips" and "photography classes" so you stop paying for searches that will never book. Track phone calls too, because many photography clients call before they book.
Not if you need revenue this year. SEO takes 6 to 18 months to show real results, and even when you rank there's a ceiling: only so many page-one spots and so many local searches each month. Google Ads and Meta Ads put your studio in front of people in your city now. Treat SEO as an asset, not a lifeline. Run ads to book clients now while SEO builds in the background, so by month 12 you have both.
They can connect to your ad account, but don't hand them your budget. Meta's Ads MCP, released as an open beta in April 2026, lets ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code and Perplexity read your results and build campaigns, ad sets, ads and audiences. Anything it creates starts paused, and it asks before switching anything on. Set a budget cap in Meta Business Suite first, start with questions like "How did my ads do last week?", and approve every change yourself.
