# Become Dyson in Your Market, or Buy the Toothbrush

James Dyson launched a $499 toothbrush with a camera in it. They had to invent it from scratch. You can open Instagram tonight and build the look tomorrow.

James Dyson stood on a stage in Paris this morning and launched a $499 toothbrush. He is 79. The brush has a camera in it, which is a sentence I did not expect to type today, and now I cannot stop thinking about it.

This morning the feed looked like this. Same product. Same joke. Same people who will buy it anyway.

The camera sits in the head and takes 28 pictures a second while you brush. Software trained on 470,000 mouths finds the gaps between your teeth. A jet of mouthrinse hits the gap in a tenth of a second. It flosses for you while you brush. They call it Gap Optical Targeting, of course they do, and they made a whole [film](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF2piG0N5gg) about how they did not start with a toothbrush at all. They started with a jet, because a jet can floss and a brush cannot.

The internet did what the internet does. _Who needs a camera in their mouth?_ A $6 brush and a piece of floss still do the same job. The British Dental Association said it out loud today: big brands with high price tags are no substitute for a proper routine. All true. And it is going to sell.

Same way the $700 vacuum sells when the $200 one with a cord cleans just as well. Same way people save all year for a $499 Airwrap. Same way a client will drive past three cheaper photographers to sit in the studio that feels like the one.

Dyson does not get $499 for a toothbrush because of the camera. They get it because they have been the most obsessive people in categories nobody thought were worth obsessing over since the late 1970s, and because they never stop. Nobody is paying them for clean teeth. They are paying to own the thing made by the people who obviously care more than anyone else.

### Key Takeaways

- Dyson launched a $499 CameraJet toothbrush in Paris on 1 September 2026. The camera is not why it will sell. The 50-year habit of obsessing over ignored categories is.
- You are not starting from a blank lab. Humberto Garcia's rule at Photography to Profits: open Instagram tonight, copy the look the busy studios are already shipping, and build it properly this month.
- Two options: ship the set you will sell in November, or buy the toothbrush and own one more camera.

## They had to invent it from scratch

In the late 1970s Dyson bought a Hoover Junior, the most powerful vacuum on the market. It lost suction. He cut the bag open. The pores were clogged with dust. That was not a defect. That was the business model. Bags were the razor blade.

Then he was at a sawmill and watched industrial cyclones pull sawdust out of the air. He strapped a cardboard cyclone onto the Hoover. It was ugly. It picked up more dirt. Fifteen years. 5,127 prototypes. His wife giving art lessons so they could keep the lights on. Every major manufacturer said no. In Japan he licensed a hot-pink machine called the G-Force, sold it for about $2,000, and it became a status object. The royalties let him build DC01 in Chippenham in 1993. Yellow. Clear bin. You could see the dirt. Within two years it was outselling Hoover in Britain.

That should have been the story. Inventor beats the bag. Credits roll. He did not stop. Washing machines. A hand dryer that fires air at 400 miles an hour. A fan with no blades. A hair dryer that looks like a spaceship. The Airwrap. Headphones. This morning, your mouth.

The vacuum, the man inside his own machine, then hair. Launch coverage put [661 engineers](https://www.gbnews.com/tech/dyson-camerajet-toothbrush-price-features) on the toothbrush. Six years. They grew their own plaque to test against. They built a tank that still fires when you tip the brush sideways to reach the back teeth. They are going to sell you the toothpaste too, because foam blinds the camera.

That is a company that had to recreate the whole object from scratch, with a team, because the category did not already have a version of this. There was no busy toothbrush studio to copy. Nobody is going to knock this off next week. A factory somewhere will try, and it will take them a while, and Dyson will have already made the money. They are known for making the one that is obviously the best. That is the whole business.

## What's next

Reddit already wrote the dirty version. _Thank goodness it has AI. I would never find the spaces between my teeth without it._ Someone in the same [thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/dyson/comments/1w2oghp/dyson_camerajet_electric_toothbrush/) said the sequel is a range of sex toys.

I think they have the right instinct and the wrong product name. My prediction is not a SKU. They will keep putting cameras into rooms nobody asked them to enter. Mouths this morning. Adult toys. An MRI. I don't know the object. I know the pattern. If a category still has a gap, they will spend six years and 661 engineers on it, price it like an Airwrap, take the jokes, and sell it anyway.

## What you do with this

The obvious version of this post is wrong. It would tell you to spend six years and 661 engineers on a holiday campaign so you can charge $499. That is [how you never launch](/blog/sunken-cost-fallacy-photography).

You are not Dyson starting from a blank lab. You can open Facebook groups and Instagram tonight and see the color palettes the busy studios are actually using. Tomorrow you can build a similar set in your room. If you already photograph dogs, add a prop. If you shoot boudoir, hang a pair of angel wings or light a shower scene. It does not take six years to blow away your audience. It takes looking, then building it properly so it does not look like a screenshot of someone else's feed.

You are selling a local service. In a small town or even a city, the client who drives past three cheaper photographers is not comparing you to some national version of this. They are comparing you to last year's you, and to the studio down the street that is still shooting the same gray backdrop. Recreate the look, ship it, and they will think you are mind-bendingly good. Which, if you can actually light it, is true.

A $6 brush and a length of floss still clean teeth. An iPhone still takes a picture. People still pay the studio that is obviously the one who cares the most. You get there by shipping the new look, not by waiting until you have invented something nobody has seen.

## Two options

It is September 1. The set you build this month is the one you are selling in November. So you have two options. You can look at what the busy rooms are doing, recreate it from scratch with your team, and ship it. Or you can buy the toothbrush and own one more camera.

What's the one set, look, or offer you've been meaning to build for this season?

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How can my photography studio charge more than cheaper photographers in my town?

Be the studio that obviously cares more than anyone else. People don't pay Dyson $499 for clean teeth; they pay to own the thing made by people who obsess over a category and never stop. A client will drive past three cheaper photographers the same way, to sit in the studio that feels like the one. For you, that means refreshing your sets and looks instead of shooting the same gray backdrop year after year.

### Is it okay to copy the sets other photography studios are using?

Yes. Recreate the look, then build it properly so it doesn't look like a screenshot of someone else's feed. Humberto's rule: open Instagram and Facebook groups tonight, study the color palettes the busy studios are actually using, and build a similar set in your own room this month. You're not Dyson starting from a blank lab, so you don't have to invent the category to stand out. The difference is in how well you build and light it.

### When should I build my holiday photography set?

Build it in September. The set you build in September is the one you sell in November. Look at what the busy studios are already shipping, recreate it from scratch with your team, and launch it. Humberto puts the choice bluntly: ship the set you'll sell in November, or buy the new gadget and own one more camera.

### Who are my local photography clients comparing me to?

Mostly to last year's you and the studio down the street. In a small town or even a city, a local client isn't comparing you to some national version of photography. She's comparing your work to what you showed last season and to the competitor still shooting the same gray backdrop. That's why recreating a fresh look and shipping it can make you seem far ahead locally, as long as you can actually light it.

### Should I buy new camera gear or invest in a new studio set?

Build the set. Gear doesn't separate you: an iPhone still takes a picture, the same way a $6 brush and floss still clean teeth. What clients pay for is the studio that obviously cares the most, and that shows up in new looks you actually ship. If you already have the studio and the taste and your ideas are sitting in a folder, buying one more camera won't fix that.

### How long does it take to create a new photography set that wows clients?

Days, not years. Dyson spent six years and 661 engineers on a toothbrush because there was nothing to copy, but you can look at what busy studios are shipping tonight and build a similar set tomorrow. Small additions work: if you photograph dogs, add a prop; if you shoot boudoir, hang a pair of angel wings or light a shower scene. Waiting until you've invented something nobody has seen is how you never launch.
